Tips for Visiting
Grandma Hazel

How to find her
The easiest way to find her room is to enter the doors at the end of her wing (North Wing 300's). The doors are between the Village Square and the Rose Garden (see map). She is in Room 311.

Please send Grandma Hazel letters and pictures at the following address:

If she’s not in her room, ask her roommate, Miriam Horst. If she doesn’t know, ask the staff in the hallway or at the Farmhouse In nurse’s station at the end of the wing. Grandma will not want to miss your visit! Please be sure to sign the guest book with date and time. You could also add comments. Everyone including Grandma will be glad to have this information.

She’s asleep?
If Grandma is asleep, touch her arm and talk to her. She will want you to wake her. Help her sit up on the side of the bed. She would appreciate you helping her find her glasses and a comb (maybe in a drawer). If she wants to walk, help her put on her shoes. (Walking in her socks is not safe.) She uses the walker. Depending on the height of the chair, she can usually stand up by herself if someone holds the walker steady.

What to do?
You’ll find a folding chair (or two) in the closet. You might enjoy looking at photos. The albums are in the bookshelf as well as memory books. Her strongest memories are of people - family and those she knew in her early years.

She enjoys working crossword puzzles. The Scrabble game and Dominos are in the closet. I’m not sure how it might work to use her over bed table. The sunroom at the end of her wing has a table big enough for 3-4 people to play. The dining room or activity room might be available with plenty of table space. I would check out the space before taking Grandma the distance. She continues to enjoy doing calligraphy. Her pens are in a the second drawer under the mirror. She loves to do lettering projects for others.

Take a walk?
Grandma uses the wheelchair to go to the dining room and activity room (near the main entrance). Be sure to set the brakes before she sits or it may roll away from her! A nice walk is to go around the nurse’s station and find the hallway leading to the Village Square. You’ll find the Cafe and sitting area.

What’s her schedule?
She eats lunch and supper in the dining room. The doors open at 11:45 and 4:45. The activity calendar is posted on the bathroom door.

How about taking her out?
If you plan to take her out, call ahead to the nurse’s station, 717-263-8545 ext. 3237 (Farmhouse Inn) and let them know so that they can cancel her meal and make sure she gets her medications. The doctor has cleared her for ‘therapeutic leave’. She needs to be signed out and back in at the nurse’s station. The Cafe is open 8 am -6 pm Mon- Fri. I suggest taking her there. If you want to eat with her in the the Village Inn dining room you need to call ahead for reservations. Lunch is $8.25 and supper is $4.50 to be paid in the dining room.

You’re ready to leave
If you are leaving before a meal, you might get her seated in the dining room before saying good bye. If she will be alone, you could start some music on her CD player. Check the volume with her. You could also give her the crossword puzzle book and pen so she has something to do. Or she might ask lie down. You can help her take off her shoes. Make sure she has the call cord nearby before you leave.
